The largest map you can have is 128 x 80 tiles, while the smallest is 20 x 20. If the values in the two sliders – representing the X and Y axes – are the same, then the resulting map will be square. On the left-hand side you have a selection of Map Options, the most important being the size of the map which you can adjust by using the sliders and clicking Generate Blank Map. You will then be presented with a screen like the one on the right, which appears to be just sea. Once you have done this, and followed the instructions to open the utility, select New Map. To get started with WorldBuilder, you will first need to install the Civilization V SDK, following the guide in the earlier article in this series. Whichever path you take, the WorldBuilder tool, available as part of the Civilization V SDK, is great fun to use. Using a tile-based brush system you can create entire worlds of archipelagos, single continents, and insane worlds where even the smallest and weakest tribes can eventually reign supreme thanks to your specific placement of various resources and landscape types that you will be able to take advantage of during the game.įor the best results, of course, you will probably choose to fairly distribute these resources, just as you might choose to randomize start positions and other aspects that might affect how the game is played. If you’re particularly fussy about the position your tribe starts off from or you want to develop your own Civilization V scenarios, taking advantage of the WorldBuilder tool and creating a map from scratch is a great way to do both of these things and more. In the first game, I got what seemed to be a scripted event based on era progression that basically gave me a choice to fund an expedition to find the New World. This isn't a suggestion, so much as an observation. There need to be some storms/random disasters at sea in the very early ages that can sink your ships without warning.ĥ. There's also no risk at all you can venture out one turn's worth of movement, and if you don't spot coastal waters, come right back to safety. Especially if you have bonuses to naval movement (Lighthouse of Alexandria, etc.). As it is, it is not that hard to cross the unusually narrow oceans in a quadrireme. Obviously this is what delayed colonization of the Americas historically. Progress colonizing the new continent should be very slow, not a steamroller.Ĥ. I have yet to see an independent city or outpost in the New World. As it is, an occasional mercenary band pops up, but it's usually from a nearby island. They ought to be quite a challenge, and not too pleased with the invaders (you). If you're roleplaying, you will have some interesting choices as to how to deal with your new neighbors. Would be historically accurate as well as make for a better game. There need to be a lot more established independent peoples in the New World. At the very least, your trade partners should discover its approximate location not long after you do.ģ. The AI factions should prioritize finding the New World, as long as their situation allows it. I come into the game with meta-knowledge that another continent is out there. Needs to be tuned way back, like giving you the choice of maybe three infrastructures to start with instead of 15 or whatever.Ģ. This includes instantaneous fortifications. The city pops out of nowhere and is almost as strong as your original cities (less population but far more infrastructure). The tech that makes new cities start with all the Era I-III infrastructure is ludicrously overpowered. In two games now (first on Metropolis difficulty, second Nation), I have claimed the entire New World continent before any other faction even discovers it. However, in Humankind, the AI seems very, very bad at this. So, I've always found these maps great fun in Civ it adds an extra early/mid-game race and can mix things up with new neighbors, not to mention giving you a reason to build and research boats.
